CHAPTER 12

BEFORE GOING TO THE RUINS, WE ALL NEEDED to be armed in case anything attacked us. I grabbed the stone swords that Maison and I had made before. Going over to Dad’s crafting table, I used two pieces of stone and a stick and made another stone sword for Destiny.

“Um, do I get a weapon?” Yancy asked.

I kept working at the crafting table, finishing up Destiny’s sword, and didn’t say a word.

“Helloooo,” Yancy called over my shoulder. “Earth to Stevie: can you read me?”

“If mobs attack you, just hit them with your backpack,” I said bitterly. “I don’t trust you with a real weapon. Weapons are only supposed to be used for self-defense if there’s no other way to defend yourself. You’d probably use them like toys.”

“Ouch, Stevie,” Yancy said. “Maybe Herobrine’s already getting to you.”

I glared at him. No, I was just being careful and realistic. “Come on, let’s go,” I said.

Alex led us toward the ruins, since she was the only one who knew where they were. As we walked closer and closer, we found more and more trees without leaves. By the time we stood over the ruins, sunset wasn’t far off. None of the trees in the area had any leaves at all.

“All right,” Alex said in a take-charge voice. “Everyone spread out in the ruins and look.”

Yancy started to walk in on his own, and Alex grabbed him by the arm. “Oh, no,” she said. “You’re looking with me.”

Even though we were supposed to spread out, I found myself automatically hanging close to Maison. A few feet away from each other, we dug through debris and pulled up stones.

“I found a map,” Alex said from the other side of the ruins. I looked up to see her squinting at a map. “Hmm,” she said. “This map is of a place that isn’t too far from here. I wonder if there’s a connection …”

“Let me see that,” Yancy said. “It might just be an ordinary map.”

“No,” Alex said, pulling the map back when he tried to take it. “I’ve lived here my whole life. I know the landscape better than you.”

I found an old chest and opened it, but it was empty. Overhead, the sun was barely over the horizon.

“We have to hurry,” I called out, so everyone could hear it. “We’re going to have to head back soon.”

Maison looked at me in surprise.

“What?” I said. “It’s going to get dark soon, and we can’t stay out after dark. That’s when the mobs come out.”

“Stevie,” Maison said slowly, shaking her head, “I don’t think we have a choice here.”

The others were still digging, and I realized what she was trying to say. My first thought had been to run back home for the night and continue our mission in the morning. I was never out at night if I could help it. Home was safe with its iron doors and protecting torches.

But none of the clues would tell us how long we had before Herobrine took everything over.
